Education chief warns that students may struggle with exams
By Jaime Sarrio • THE TENNESSEAN • February 24, 2010
Tennessee's top education official predicts the majority of the state's 1,700 schools will fail to meet standardized testing goals this spring because of the new, tougher public school curriculum introduced this school year.
Tennessee's schools are more challenging, and tests that measure what students know will be tougher too, said Commissioner of Education Timothy Webb. That means students and schools that boasted high test scores under the old system may for the first time wind up with a failing grade. |

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for their interest in our school system. I appreciate the kind words and support that I have received as of late. I also know that the school board appreciates your input whether it be in favor of my performance or not. I am afraid that this controversy has become more than it should be. It is a natural and necessary process to review the performance of an individual at the end of their contracted term. I welcome the evaluation as an opportunity for growth in my role as Director of Schools. It is difficult for anyone to hear criticism for something in which they have invested much of their time and devotion. Never the less, it is necessary. There is always room for improvement and every perspective should be considered when planning for such progress. |

I ran across this quote by Vince Lombardi the other night, and wanted to be able to share it in some way:
"Unless a man believes in himself and makes a total commitment to his career and puts everything he has into it-his mind, his body and his heart-what is life worth to him? If I were a salesman, I would make this commitment to my company, to the product and most of all, to myself." - Vince Lombardi

The Open House/Ribbon Cutting at LES was a great success last night! The community turn out was wonderful. While we still have some work to do, our new facility is truly an asset to Moore County. Our new elementary school is a source of pride for all of us. Mr. Smith (our principal) had a visitor from Georgia at the school yesterday and last night. He is moving in to our community soon and just happened to come to visit the schools on the day of the Open House. The man was truly impressed with our facilities. I overheard him say very excitedly, "I am not sure if I am more impressed with the auditorium or the library!" What a great compliment for all of us. A new member of our community is very excited that his children will attend school in such a first class facility! |
